Vallejo
And The Art Of The Americas The Hispanic Reporter
April,
1996.
Linda
Vallejo, whose work we feature on our cover, owns
the Galeria Las Americas, dedicated to showing
the outstanding works of Chicano and Latin American artists. Many
critics believe that when she shows her own work, it is among the
best the Galena offers.
Linda founded Galeria Las Americas five years ago to enhance the
ability of Hispanic artists to find galleries where their works
would be hung. The Galena now represents over thirty contemporary
Chicano and Latino American artists from South and Central America,
Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, and the United States. It was
recently included in "Quien es Quien in U.S. Commerce 1994," New
York. ft has also received awards of merit and distinguished recognition
from the National Association of Chicano Studies, City of Los Ángeles,
lnstitute of Hispanic Cultural Studies and Comision Femenil de
Los Ángeles.
Her own very successful show, "Sola!", ended December
16th, with many laudatory reviews.
Galena Las Americas is now presenting "Los Vencedores - The
Victorious," running through June 6. One of the two featured
artists is Nik Fernandez, a prolific and talented painter from
Venezuela, who presents works honoring the dignity and monumental
history of the indigenous people of the American continent, using
fragments, found objects and rubble to miraculously produce a unified
vision of strength, wisdom, honor and integrity.
The other featured artist is Mario G. Lopez, a mild mannered and
unassuming artist who surprises the viewer with his ability to
produce incredibly sophisticated polymorphic paintings of the female
nude. His painterly style is reminiscent of the German expressionists,
full of angst, torment, movement and emotion. He is a colorist
of great ability, mixing directly on the canvas to create complex
blends of every conceivable shade, using color to express dynamic
feeling. Lopez halls from Honduras, and has received 1st Place
Painting Awards from the Vincent Price Gallery Art Festival at
East Los Ángeles College and from the Union Gallery Ink
and Clay contest, Pomona, CA.
Gallery hours Thurs Fri 11-6 PM, Sat 11-5 PM.
