Oil on canvas.Found tree fragments.Tinker toys...Recycled Styrofoam.Add a deeply-held conviction about humanity's relationship to the world and you enter the world of Linda Vallejo. Growing up in a military family, living and studying abroad, Linda's life experiences have been shaped by many cultures, teaching her that nature and natural resources belong to all. Her work reflects a deep appreciation for the enduring beauty of nature and an awareness of our responsibility to protect our natural resources. She explores the two-edged sword of our destruction of nature and, conversely, the power of nature to heal and console. Her work is influenced by Spanish and Mexican artists Rivera and Siqueiros, American artists Rothko and O'Keeffe, and contemporary artists Ana Mendieta and Lee Bontecou. She also draws emotional depth from Native American and Mexican ceremonial traditions and symbols. She asks, "Can we reconcile our relationship with nature, its beauty and strength, with our destructive, violent nature?" Her art takes us on a journey to answer this timely contemporary question.

About Focus on the Masters Tuesday Talk Series:

Establisahed in 1994, Focus on the Masters (FOTM) is a non-profit arts appreciation program that documents, preserves and presents the works and lives of accomplished contemporary artists, emphasizing the importance of the arts to a healthy society. The FOTM Archive has been utilized by museum curators, directors, scholars and the media, including the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Museum of Ventura County.

Throughout the year, FOTM collects information for the archive on as many artists as possible who live or work within Ventura County . Each year end, a panel of distinguished artists and arts advocates select from a nominated list 10 artists (5 women and 5 men) for formal documentation. Artists selected are based on the following criteria: the artist's mastery of the medium; the artist's level of peer recognition; and the artist's contribution to the cultural history of Ventura County.

Additional considerations include selecting a group of artists who practice a variety of media so that all creative expressions are represented. The artist's age, health and availability can also influence the selection process.

Each artist's documentation begins with the gathering of biographical materials. Resources include publications, essays, published work, slides, CDs, video recordings and ephemera of all types. These materials are the basis for each of the artist's archive. Additionally, the artist is interviewed in a one-on-one recorded oral history and at the Tuesday Talk, which is video taped in front of a live audience. The Tuesday Talk provides the public with an opportunity to meet the artists and experience their work first hand, as they share their personal experience and give advice to the gathered audience.

Finally, each artist is photographed by FOTM Founder Donna Granata. The portrait is added to the Focus on the Masters Portrait Series and posted in the Artists Gallery on the FOTM website http://www.focusonthemasters.com/gallery/gallery_artists.html. The portraits become ambassadors and are widely exhibited and collected.

The artists who are recorded in history are those who write or those who are written about. If you are an artist living or working within Ventura County, please send non-returnable biographical information to FOTM, 1147 E. Main St., Ventura CA 93001 or to support@FocusOnTheMasters.com. Please add us to your mailing list and keep us up-to-date on your career.
