Mujeres de Maiz Zine 2007

With this zine, the founders of Mujeres de Maiz give thanks for another year of life, walking in beauty on our sacred Mother Earth, Tonantzin.

Our collective has come together again after years of hibernation to give birth to another publication and performance in honor of women, of each other, and of the people of this continent and beyond.

On this, our 10th anniversary and 5th publication, we bring together creations from a cross-section of women; who started with us 10 years ago in the various warehouse of East Los Angeles and those new to the group having connected through virtual reality and beyond.

We ask you to turn each page with respect and an open mind and heart — realizing that each woman’s words or art is a reflection of her and of you. This is a time when prophecy begins to come to life and when the women lead. The creations within these pages are the continuing of that prophecy. In print — it is a chronicle of women’s herstory and a vision for the future.

We hope that it bring reflection and encourage to all who hold it within their hands and that you may pass on that energy to others.

All our relations.

Day and Night

Remembering, hoping, following…

I follow the daylight
I follow the moonlight
traveling across the sky’s generous arc
with the mirror of my heart
Following

               I am transparent green
               I am trembling yellow
               breathing in nature’s sweet essence
with the mirror of my elusive soul
               Remembering

I float above reason and understanding
I trust in vision and knowing
shifting luminous clouds in burnt blue
with water, fire, and earth in harmony
                              Hoping

               I love natural truth
I love the presence of its strength
needing the earths’ love and compassion
with recollection of each precious moment
               Fleeting

Where is our resilient faith?
Where is the balance of our natural world?
destroying without thought, our beautiful paradise
with each terrible destruction
Repeating

          So....

                              I follow the daylight
                              I follow the moonlight
traveling across the sky’s generous arc
with the mirror of my heart
               Remembering, hoping, following
