A PRAYER FOR THE EARTH Painting & Installation by Linda Vallejo Exhibit Dates: September 11 - November 21, 2004 Reception: Sunday, September 12, 3-5 pm Artist's Gallery Talk: Sunday, November 7, 2pm CLICK HERE FOR FULL COLOR BROCHURE Over the past two decades, Linda Vallejo has created portfolios entitled "Los Cielos" and "Nature and Spirit," with images that seek to define humanity's fundamental relationship to the natural world. In opposing portfolios such as "The Death of Urban Humanity," the work moved from the beauty of nature, to the devastation of nature, and the barren complexity of the urban world. A Prayer for the Earth combines these two irreconcilable visions to create a political, ecological, and spiritual image to unite the beauty and tranquility of nature with the violence and carnage of its destruction. Vallejo states, "The destructive legacy of pollution has proven an inevitable aspect of humanity's presence and heritage. Each day, the beauty of nature and our relationship to it is lost, as industry and sprawling cities obscure and destroy clean water sources, precious mountain ranges, and tender trees and flora. How can we live a life of peace and beauty in the midst of this loss? This offering is a reminder of this question and includes paintings and sculptures inspired by the living California landscape, and finally at its core, symbols of a prayer for the earth.
