A Presentation Of The Art Work And Career Of Artists

That Focus On Ecological, Political, and Spiritual Issues In America

ABSTRACT

The work of Kim Abeles over the past two decades results from urban experience, chronicled through historical and contemporary art images. Since 1985, Kim has created art works dealing with the urban environment, pollution, feminism, aging, HIV/AIDS, and labor issues. As a professor at Cal State University, Northridge, she has organized and co-curated major traveling art exhibitions. Abeles' art work has been exhibited in the United States, Canada, Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

As a visual artist, Judith Baca is known for her large-scale, public murals involving extensive community organizing and participation. In the Great Wall of Los Angeles mural, Baca designed a work that incorporated 40 scholars, 450 neighborhood youth, 40 artists and 100 support staff to paint a mural on the history of California. Currently, Baca is producing the World Wall: A Vision of the Future Without Fear, a 210-foot mural addressing contemporary issues of war, peace, cooperation, interdependence, and spiritual growth. Baca is a professor at University of California, Los Angeles, and founded the Social and Public Art Resource Center in Venice, California.

Over the past 25 years, artist Linda Vallejo has created images that define humanity's intrinsic, yet tenuous relationship to nature. Vallejo states, "I don't believe a healthy human culture can be sustained while destroying nature." Her concern for the environment comes from twenty years of study in the Native American ceremonial traditions. Vallejo's recent work include "Los Cielos," depicting our spiritual connection to the skies, and "Nature and Spirit," a portfolio depicting a humanistic metamorphosis with nature. Vallejo has exhibited her work in galleries and museums throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe. She is also the founder of Galeria Las Americas.
